Legacy Bricks is a project led by the Rosemoor Community Association in partnership with community residents and Human Scale. Through a series of community workshops, a design concept for a standard vacant lot was created. The concept embodies the shared vision of a space rooted in education, peace, equality, and faith. More than a garden, the space is a living tribute and a unifying ground. It is a place where history and hope intersect, where neighbors can gather to learn, grow, and celebrate together.

Human Scale created a schematic design and budget that can be used to help secure funding for the project.

Rosemoor’s identity has been shaped by Chicago’s rail and labor history, particularly through the Pullman Company, the Pullman Porters, and the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, whose work advanced both labor and civil rights nationwide. Locally, the founding of the Rosemoor Community Association in 1937 reinforced a tradition of community advocacy and self-determination. Today, Rosemoor faces challenges including population decline, economic disinvestment, and commercial vacancies, with current revitalization efforts focused on strengthening local businesses, improving commercial corridors, and enhancing public spaces to support long-term community growth and resilience.

The main goal of the project is to honor the legacy of Black leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and A. Philip Randolph. The design concept transforms a standard Chicago vacant lot into a vibrant, multi-purpose destination. The entry is defined by a linear pathway that represents Faith, it welcomes and invites everyone to meander through the lot. Along this journey, the landscape unfolds into spaces that reflect the values and aspirations of the Rosemoor community.

At its heart, a reflective garden offers seating, planters, and community artwork that create a place for rest, contemplation, and peace. Adjacent shipping containers provide opportunities for local vendors to generate income, and job opportunities while ensuring the space remains grounded in equality and economic empowerment. The pathway continues toward a community stage that is used as a platform to showcase talent through performances and workshops. This space celebrates culture while fostering education and dialogue.
